Biloxi Shrimping Trip — a hands-on adventure

A delicious shrimp dinner is a treat visitors often enjoy during a trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Getting to view firsthand where their dinner originates is an experience most will never forget.

The Biloxi Shrimping Trip, a Gulf Coast attraction since 1955, offers family fun on a 70-minute excursion on an authentic shrimp boat, The Sail Fish. Capt. Mike Moore and his wife, Brandy, took over the business two years ago and make sure everyone on board has “the time of their life.” For the comfort of novice sailors, the cruise is navigated in the calm, protected waters between Deer Island and the Biloxi shoreline.

Boarding a shrimp boat and helping to pull a variety of sea life from the Gulf in the giant nets is only half the fun of this marine adventure cruise.

Upon leaving the harbor, the shrimping net is set out and Moore illustrates the dynamics behind the opening and operation of the net. Young shrimpers are excited to learn the net will catch any and all sea creatures in its path along with the shrimp. Best of all, they get to view every moment of the process that brings fresh seafood to the Gulf Coast and the rest of the United States.

Varieties that frequently surface along with the shrimp include blue crabs, flounder, stingray, oysterfish, squid, pufferfish and numerous other species of local marine life. The entire catch is identified and presented for inspection by the young crewmembers.

Following the inspection, a large aquarium on board is filled with a selection of the harmless species, allowing youngsters the opportunity to actually reach in and touch the “catch of the day.” Those on board are encouraged to feed the dolphins that follow in the wake of the boat.

The Biloxi Shrimping Trip costs $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 4-12, and are free for children younger than 3. Group rates are available.

The boat is located at 693 Beach Blvd. at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, U.S. 90 E. at Main Street. Call (228) 385-1182 for daily departure times.
